Curvy QT is on a mission to provide trendy, stylish apparel at affordable prices to plus size women worldwide who want to celebrate the beauty of their curves and understand that “Sexy is a Vibe, Not a Size.”
“Growing up fat and fabulous, wasn’t easy”, said Co-founder, Yolanda Orozco. “I’ve always been big. By the time I was 8, my mom was already shopping in the women’s section for me. And by jr. high and high school, we had found a department store specializing in plus sizes, but the options were lacking. I had the choice of mumu like clothes, grandmotherly looking clothes, and a lot of black.”
Yolanda has a background in retail sales and management, and after a devastating car wreck with a drunk driver changed her life, she decided to go back to school. While working on her degree at UC Berkeley she found the plus size community and got involved. By the time she graduated in 2001 she knew she wanted to be involved in fashion, but chose to learn more by working for another plus size retailer.
Together with her sister, Cynthia, they started Curvy QT in 2008. “I decided this was it. This is my time now. I had been doing things for other people and not following my own dreams. I showed my sister my ideas and what I had already done, and that was it. She was on board.”
A partnership was born, and as plus size women themselves, Cynthia and Yolanda see the disparity in plus size clothing choices in the market. “We represent the over 60% of women in the United States that wear a size 14 or larger, yet plus sizes represent only about 30% of the market. There’s a lot of potential out there for designers. We aim to go beyond selling clothing and help our customers enhance the beauty they already possess by offering clothing that accentuates their natural curves.”
The Institute for Women Entrepreneurs has named Curvy QT a women owned business to watch.
